Based on the real-life character SS officer, this presentation covers from 1918 to 1942 and concentrates on the rise of the Nazis through the Weimar Republic years, including the Treaty of Versailles and the Enabling Act. Within the presentation aspect of the Holocaust are covered, however, on request we can switch the main emphasis to focus on the Holocaust and the persecution by the Nazis.

This is a startlingly effective resource developed with schools, for schools, using original accounts.

This is just one of the characters you can see in the DVD “Talk History” we have written and produced for syllabus-setting exam-board, OCR. Click here to order a copy. Back to Top

World War 2

History Squad character World War 2 image 1

This soldier has been in action during the Dunkirk campaign and has returned on leave and has been plunged with his family into the depths of the blitz in wartime Britain. We bring to life 1940’s Britain; rationing, blackouts, evacuation etc. There is lots of hands-on opportunity with weapons and equipment, but as a bonus the children are formed together into a squad and put through their paces through drill. Based on real life experiences, our most poignant offering is a British Tommy fighting on the Western Front. Combining vivid descriptions of battle and life in the trenches drawn from the late Harry Patch's stories and other contemporary accounts, the presentation highlights the terrible plight and conditions faced by soldiers. There are plenty of artefacts, weapons and hands-on opportunities to enhance this session, including a Lewis Gun. Back to Top

Victorian

We offer two characters for this period;

The Victorian Policeman uses my own experience as an ex-police officer and transfers the experiences back to the reign of Queen Victoria. It not only covers crime and punishment, but also the reasons behind it; poverty for example. The children will have the opportunity to handle the artefacts and we also involve the youngsters in a whipping top competition.

Also, we have recently created a Victorian Schoolmaster character for Cambridge OCR. We can turn the clock back in your classroom to the 1850s and with slate and chalk give the children a lesson as if they were back in time. We can include virtually any topic within this lesson, such as the Industrial Revolution, Crime & Punishment, Disease, Life in Victorian Times and even cover The Empire. We have various artefacts to bring along together with slates and Tudor hornbooks for the children to use within the lesson. Back to Top

Waterloo/French Revolution

History Squad character Waterloo image 1The History Squad thumbnail image spacerHistory Squad character Waterloo image 2The History Squad thumbnail image spacerHistory Squad character Waterloo image 3

To finish off the French Revolution, we have put together a red-coated corporal from Wellington’s army, who has fought his way through the Peninsular Wars, through Waterloo and is now in the occupying forces in Paris. This is a window into a fascinating period, as the soldier not only reveals the military side but also divulges life on the streets of England at the time. One of the aspects he covers is battlefield surgery; how the wounded were dealt with how surgery & medicine itself began to improve. A live musketry display is included within the package. Slavery

This character is based on a slave captain who became sickened by his bloody trade and became an abolitionist and reformer. The workshop takes you from the point of capture in their village in Africa covering their journey to the coast and their inevitable onward journey to the Caribbean. Pupils will have the opportunity to handle the manacles and chains used by the slavers. Back to Top

Offering both Parliamentarian and Royalist characters, audiences can experience the shock and tragedy of brothers divided by the sword and the conviction of their beliefs. The equipment we bring enables us to dress students as a pike man, musketeer and cavalry trooper, we also bring a life-size model of a civil war canon into the classroom accompanying these sessions is a live-firing musketry display. History Squad character Tudor Bowman image 2The History Squad thumbnail image spacerHistory Squad character Tudor Bowman image 2

We offer two characters for this period;

Tudor Bowman; generally beginning with a short introduction on how the Tudors came to power i.e. with the death of Richard III, this helps set the stage for the Tudors. We bring along artefacts, such as writing instruments, eating utensils, coins etc. and encourage the children to dress up and join in the day. If required, and location permits, we can demonstrate the longbow or even fire a musket, as this was the beginning of the era of guns.

Tudor Sailor; master gunner from Sir Frances Drake’s ship, Revenge.  Complete with ships cannon, this character will give you the English view of the Spanish Armada.  Students will have the opportunity to go through the loading drill of the cannon to show how our sailors were so well trained, and who knows it may even go BANG!  This is just one of the characters you can see in the bespoke DVD “Talk History” we have written and produced for syllabus-setting exam-board, OCR.  Click here to order a copy. An Optio with the II Legion forges his way through the wild lands of untamed Britain. This hands-on workshop is so much fun, it consists of shield formations and drill with orders given in Latin and then called on the trumpet (a cornucun) by the pupils. A kit bag full of equipment accompanies this session, giving the children an insight into life in Roman Britain. Back to Top
